Jeans

Italy can claim to the origins of jeans fabric as research shows it emerged in two cities –  Genoa, Italy and Nimes, France. Gênes, the French word for Genoa, could be the origin of the word “jeans”.

Genoa’s jean fabric was a fustian textile, described as being “medium quality and of reasonable cost”, very like the cotton corduroy for which Genoa was already famous.

The Genoa jean fabric was “used for work clothes in general”.

By the 17th century, Genoa jean was an essential textile for working-class people in Northern Italy. Genoese sailors used jeans fabric to cover and protect their goods on the docks from the weather. During the Republic of Genoa (17th, 18th centuries), merchants exported jeans fabric throughout Europe.

It was in the late 19th century that jeans became popular in the United States, when Levi Strauss & Co. introduced blue jean overalls in 1873.
